- Grammarly is a Web plug-in that helps with spelling and grammar when you’re typing online.
- Kurzweil Software: Helps with reading, as focusing and concentrating on text can be challenging for ADHD students. Kurzweil transforms text into speech and also highlights text while students read, aiding in retention.
- Inspiration Software: A visual learning tool that pairs words with images, turning concepts into graphs, maps, and charts to represent larger ideas and themes. This helps ADHD students organize and track large amounts of information, which is helpful for organizing essays or research projects.
- Dragon Naturally Speaking: This software turns speech into text. Some teachers encourage ADHD students to use it for free writing and brainstorming so they can get words on paper as they are beginning a new writing assignment.
- Comfort Contego System: A wireless assistive listening device that captures what is being said in a lecture, processes the sound so the speech is enhanced, and background noise filtered out, and then transmitted to a wireless receiver. This system is traditionally used for the hearing impaired, but it is also an excellent tool for students with ADHD to help them focus in the classroom and filter out background noise.

Speech to Text
- Most smart phones have the ability to push a microphone button on a keyboard and it will convert your speech to text.
- Google docs – Control+Shift+S Allows you to be able to talk and Google Docs will convert your speech to text. You will need to speak to add the punctuation.

Email Management
- Gmail has a schedule send feature. Need to send an email but want it to be delivered at a later time/date? Complete your email then use the schedule send button to select a date of later delivery and it will automatically send at that time.
- Gmail – Create a new message and don’t send so it saves in your draft folder. Use this to create templates of regularly sent messages. Then, just copy and paste the text into a new email each time you need to send a message.
- Settings in each email program can allow for a prompt if there hasn’t been a response after a specified number of days
- Boomerang for Gmail- Browser Extension. Allows for pausing inbox. Can schedule emails to send at future dates. Set reminders to follow up if you don’t hear back. Free and paid versions.

Below are suggestions for some tasks that these assistants may be able to help with to streamline your life. Most allow you to give it voice instructions. You will need to verify with your device type if it is capable of doing the specific task listed and how to set it up.
- Set timers

- If using a Google Home/Amazon Echo type device you can say “Hey Google, Where’s my phone” and it will call it for you, even if muted!
- Add items to lists which have been set up to sync (grocery lists, to do lists, ideas)
- Can set routines to complete tasks connected with other smart home devices (turn off lights, adjust temperature, lock doors, etc.)
- Play music
- Ask quick questions with somewhat straightforward answers so you don’t have to use your device
- Look up a recipe and have it read the steps to you
- Ask the time
- Check the weather
- Read your calendar for the day to you
- Ask it to remember something for you, “Hey Google, Remember that I put the carseat straps in the top cabinet in the garage.” Then later, you can ask, “Google, what did I ask you to remember.” and it will list it.
